Preston went 4-4-1 after the
sending-off, Harrop dropping back into midfield. For Leeds,
Phillips played centre-back in the second-half with Klich
playing deeper. The visitors' double substitution took an age to
execute, spanning the 71st to 73rd minutes, causing on-field
friction that led to the bookings of Klich and Moult. Many
sources cited Davies as the PNE player booked, together with
Dallas, after a further melee late on but 'keeper Maxwell was
definitely carded for his time-wasting. The confusion may have
derived from the referee bringing both captains together
following the incident.

After the 34th minute
substitution of Phillips, Leeds changed to three centre-backs

it seemed assymetrical until Douglas was withdrawn and Alioski
tasked with mirroring Dallas' position on the left. Klich and
then Forshaw took over as the shielding midfielder, though
neither as deep as Phillips had been. Harrison and Alioski
swapped wings at half-time so Roberts moved to the right
initially when Edmondson came on. Harrison finished the game
back in his original position though, following a further
switching of the wide attackers.

enforced substitution of Irvine with Lichaj RB, Burke LCB and a
midfield trio of Stewart, Henriksen and Kane. Later they sent on
two strikers and went 4-4-2 with Bowen and Kane wide. Leeds
responded by reverting to their original shape. This time
Forshaw played as the holding midfielder when he came on. Dallas
initially introduced on the right, soon had to cover the loss of
Douglas so Shackleton took over RW.

Wigan seemed to be 4-4-2 before settling into a 4-4-1-1 with

substitutions, the Latics' front two became McMananam supporting
Windass and finally, Vaughan up top with Windass back in the

extent, it was not obvious which position Phillips was playing.
He did not appear to have a clearly defined centre-back role but

With Robson-Kanu and Barnes running through the inside channels

satisfactorily resolved. Note that Alioski was again switched to
left wing-back after Douglas was withdrawn.

Leeds had to play with ten
men from the 39th to the 45th[+1] minute due to Cooper having
stitches to a wound above his eye, Phillips as usual filling in
at the back. This also resulted in the United skipper playing
the second-half in an unnumbered shirt. The first substitution
saw Alioski move to right-wing, Hernández tuck inside and Klich
drop back to defensive midfield. Meanwhile the final change of
Brown for Alioski meant the supporting quartet was shuffled
again to become Hernández/Roberts/Brown/Harrison. QPR who had
lost their previous seven Championship fixtures, brought on
Osayi-Samuel on the left allowing match-winner Freeman to enjoy
a spell in the free role vacated by Eze.

Harrison played in an
unnumbered shirt from the 38th minute to half-time due to a
blood injury. Alioski was man-marking Harper in the second-half,
increasingly pushing into midfield so to do. After taking a
left-wing corner in the 59th minute, Hernández swapped wings
briefly with Harrison - the pair returning to their default
positions at the restart after the third goal. West Brom brought
on Field at this point, having introduced Morrison less than a
minute before Bamford struck. Livermore took over from Barry as
captain for the Baggies, also adopting the central pivot
position with Morrison on the left of the midfield. With their
final change, Montero came on as the left-sided attacker with
Gayle switching to the right. Marcelo Bielsa was booked in the
80th minute for reacting to a challenge by Gayle on Klich, which
had gone unpunished.

For Bristol City, Semenyo
played centrally from around the 35th minute after swapping with
Paterson. Hernández played in an unnumbered shirt for most of
the first-half after his original jersey was torn. When Dallas
came on at right-wing, Hernández moved inside and Roberts took
over from Bamford up-top. Later Douglas replaced Harrison with
the customary redeployment of Alioski to play in front of the
Scot. Leeds' final substition saw Beradi come on to facilitate a
change to 3-3-3-1 with Ayling and Douglas as wing-backs. This
was possibly prompted by Bristol having a more 4-4-2 look about
them with Taylor now supporting Diedhiou.

When Douglas replaced Klich,
Alioski moved up to left-wing, Harrison swapped to the right and
Hernández shifted inside. For Reading, Méïte and Loader switched
positions from the 26th minute to half-time. Their first
substitution saw Swift drop back alongside Baker, Loader take
over as the "10", Méïte have another spell up-top and Harriott
come on at right-wing. Shortly after, Olise was introduced on
the left but he finished the game as the attacking central
midfielder when Loader gave way to a winger in McCleary.

A crucial promotion showdown
dominated by Leeds but decided by a counter-attack, culminating
in Chris Basham's crisp finish, midway through the second-half.
As usual, Alioski moved forward when Douglas came on at
left-back. Clarke was later brought on to play on the opposite
flank with Hernández moving inside. With the Blades protecting a
lead, McGoldrick was dropping deep in the closing stages so his
replacement with a midfielder altered little. In contrast Leeds
had lost their shape by this point. Jansson, beset by a knee
injury, was playing as a forward with Phillips trying to cover
for him at the back. This was of course prior to Jansson donning
Casilla's jersey and gloves in injury-time after the sweeper
keeper was sent-off for bringing down Sharp.

Phillips played centre-back
after Jansson was subbed, Klich moved back to DM, Hernández
shifted inside and Clarke came in on the right flank. Millwall
didn't make any changes until falling 3-2 behind. They then
transitioned to 4-2-4 with Marshall going to left-back, Wallace
in centre-midfield alongside Leonard, O'Brien on the left,
Morison on the right and Elliott and Gregory through the middle.

Preston brought Browne back
as cover after Pearson was sent off. Then with their first
substitution, Moult came on at centre-forward and Maguire moved
to the left. Maguire was then replaced by a midfielder in
Ledson, at which point Johnson took over on the wing. Finally
Stockley was brought on up top for the final minutes with Moult
shifting to the right. By comparison Leeds' changes were
straight forward with Alioski moving forward when Berardi came
on at left-back. More pedantically it could be noted that
Forshaw for Roberts allowed Klich to play more as the "10".

The notorious Good Friday
fixture where Leeds' hopes of automatic promotion began to
unravel. Wigan became the first team to beat Bielsa's men after
conceding the first goal; their victory all the more remarkable
as it was achieved with the handicap of an early red card for
Kipré for the dubious handball decision that gave rise to the
missed penalty. Paul Cook initially reacted by moving James to
centre-back and Evans dropping deeper. Then they changed to
three at the back (James/Dunkley/Naismith), pushed Massey up
with Clarke and asked Byrne and Robinson to provide the width as
the most energetic of wing-backs. From their perspective, it
worked magnificently though the nature of the goals given up to
Massey will long haunt United. In the second-half the Latics
brought on Olsson to play in the middle of their defence,
freeing James to return to midfield. Now with a lead to protect,
they had sacrificed a forward and were effectively 5-3-1. Their
next sub Powell, normally a midfielder, inherited the lone
striker role until Garner came on in injury-time. Leeds had made
two like-for-like changes at half-time to try and wrestle back
control while their last substitution saw Clarke replace Klich;
Hernández thereafter playing through the middle.

This was rendered a must-win
game by Sheffield United's victory at Hull prior to the kick-off
at Griffin Park. Leeds' hopes of doing so were hindered when a
seemingly clear penalty for a trip on Bamford was not awarded,
while the concession of the opening goal just before half-time
proved a blow they were unable to recover from. Harrison swapped
over to the right from the 40th minute until Clarke came on for
Jansson after Leeds fell further behind. Thereafter Forshaw
played as a centre-back, Klich was the designated defensive
midfielder but Hernández, freed from the wings, often dropped
deeper still to try and start attacks. Brentford subtly changed
to 3-4-2-1 at the end with their subs, Emiliano and Dasilva,
playing narrower and more withdrawn than Watkins and Canós had
been.
