Guide to match pages
The match pages should be easy enough to
follow but please refer to the key below.
Note that multiple substitutions made during the same break in play are usually shown with the same (earlier) time. If it is simply that the stopwatch ticked past the vertical while the formalities were being carried out, to record different times would arguably be more misleading. Please refer to the seasonal index pages, where any exceptions to this rule of thumb will be noted.
The county shown next to the referee's name will relate to their regional FA affiliation which may differ from their residence. For example Keith Stroud (Hampshire) lives in Dorset, while James Adcock (Nottinghamshire) hails from Derbyshire. Referees used to be associated with more precise locations which allowed many a commentator to make merry with "Ray Lewis from Great Bookham" but perhaps it is just as well that we no longer know exactly where they live.
The sale of stadium naming rights causes particular angst and finding a consistent approach has been difficult. Where possible, well-established historic names are given primacy such as Dean Court and Valley Parade. Both of these have been subject to many short-term sponsorship arrangements which will rapidly fade from the memory but Arsenal's new stadium is universally known as "The Emirates". To try and label it "Ashburton Grove" would only cause more confusion.
Similarly does anyone know of a sponsorship-free name for Leicester City's post-2002 home? Nice though it would be to champion use of "Filbert Way" as an alternative, one suspects that Walkers and King Power will long retain a mention in the annals of football history.
