Unusually Costa played as
the main striker in Bamford's absence, although there was a fair
bit of flexibility between him and Rodrigo. Often they paired
up, especially in the press, and later Roberts and Greenwood
similarly combined. By this stage Raphinha had been substituted
and Costa found himself back in a more familiar wing role.

Attendance is approximate as
an official figure was not disclosed. Shackleton came on prior
to the restart after Betis' second goal, there being a slight
delay while Llorente's condition was assessed. Shackleton played
at right-back with Ayling moving to the centre. Leeds lost
another centre-back late on, shortly after Nabil Fekir took a
hack at Struijk for which the Betis forward picked up a yellow
card. Struijk limped off in the 87th minute but Greenwood was
not immediately ready to replace him after an initial attempt to
use the substituted Júnior was rebuffed. Koch moved to left
centre-back to cover and Klich dropped to defensive midfield.
When Borja Iglesias was rested midway through the second-half,
the La Liga outfit shunted Canales and Fekir further forward
allowing William to slot in as one of the holding midfielders.
Canales was wearing the captain's armband by this point after
the earlier substitution of Guardado.

Ajax gradually replaced all
their outfield players through the second-half and Timber took

reshuffle that saw Ayling go to right-back, Koch drop to
centre-back and Jenkins come on at defensive midfield.

Adam Forshaw made his first
appearance for two years in a strong line-up that seemed to
involve Rodrigo and Roberts teaming up to occupy Crewe's three
centre-backs. However when Bamford came on, he clearly became
the focus of the attack and the formation was more like the

3-4-3 by pushing Johnson forward on the right and Ainley on the
left. When former United man Luke Murphy was subbed near the
end, Mandron took the captain's armband.

Leeds reacted to the

For Fulham, Hector moved to
defensive midfield when Adarabioyo (RCB) subbed on for Reed. He
was really a single pivot as Onomah pushed forward for the
closing stages with the home side mirroring United's 4-1-4-1.
Leeds switched their centre-backs from the 33rd minute while
Rodrigo and Roberts had a job swap at half-time. Meanwhile the
introduction of Forshaw in front of the back four prompted a
reshuffle that saw Shackleton go to right-back and Dallas move
into central midfield - initially alongside Klich but later
Rodrigo, who dropped back once Gelhardt came on as the front
runner. Marcelo Bielsa was booked in the 75th minute by a
referee who had made sparing use of his yellow card as regards

their lead, with Dawson on as an extra centre-back. Leeds' wide
men swapped for a couple of minutes, culminating in the

Leeds displayed their most
4-4-2 formation yet under Marcelo Bielsa with James playing as a
striker in the first-half and Struijk and Klich man-marking
Dendoncker and Moutinho respectively. At half-time, the Welsh
winger took over Harrison's position on the left and Roberts
joined Rodrigo up front. The final change brought Geldhardt on
to pep up the attack at the expense of the out-of-sorts Klich,
leading to an unlikely (and slightly more vertical) midfield
pairing of Struijk and Roberts. Wolves' Semedo switched to left
wing-back when Aït-Nouri succumbed to cramp, which acquired
significance when he found himself on hand to attempt to curtail
Geldhardt's burst into the box in injury-time. His shove on the
youngster resulted in the penalty from which Rodrigo levelled.

Harrison and James swapped a
little before the half hour mark, possibly in the hope that the
former would better track Aarons who was pushing up on the right
in the space created by Norwich's lop-sided midield. This also
meant that Dallas was often found infield as he was following
Dowell, in contrast to Shackleton who was marking a more
conventional winger in Rashica. Unusually Forshaw played as an
attacking midfielder when he came on with Rodrigo becoming the
front runner. In the final minutes Norwich withdrew Hanley,
McLean took over as captain, Omobamidele went to right
centre-back and their formation was roughly 4-2-4 with Placheta
as a very attacking left-back. The home goalkeeping coach, Ed
Wootten, was shown a yellow card in the 78th minute.

Leicester changed to 3-5-2
after their first sub with a back three of Amartey/Evans/Söyüncü
and Vardy/Lookman partnered in attack. Naturally this meant
Leeds also had to go to three centre-backs with Struijk tucking
in to replicate the back line deployed at Norwich. The formation
was now 3-4-1-2 with Dallas and Harrison (later James) as
wing-backs. Rodrigo was still in the No.10 role behind Raphinha
and James (later Roberts). At the end Cresswell came on at RCB
so Struijk adopted a third position, replacing Forshaw in
midfield. A final nuance for the Foxes was that Soumaré moved to
the right of their central trio with Tielemans' replacement,
Dewsbury-Hall, mainly operating towards the left. Barnes'
equaliser came just ten seconds after the restart following
Raphinha's goal.

Leeds sprung a surprise with
some of their positions, notably Phillips in defence to stifle
Kane and Llorente as a right-back to mark Son. Meanwhile Dallas
and Harrison matched up against the Spurs wing-backs allowing
James to press Davies, while Gelhardt cut off the passing lane
from Dier to Tanganga. The aggressive press, completed by
Forshaw and Klich sitting tight on Højbjerg and Winks, had the
desired effect in the first-half and United frequently
overturned possession. Thereafter the game turned on the
strength of the Spurs counter-press and Marcelo Bielsa opted to
make numerous reshuffles of his pack to try and wrestle back
control. Firstly Júnior came on at left-back, Struijk went to
right centre-back and Phillips pushed forward into midfield.
With ten minutes to go, Struijk and Phillips were swapped. Then
with the final substitution, Roberts moved into the front line,
Dallas joined Struijk in central midfield and McKinstry took up
station on the right flank.

Bizarrely Leeds played four
different players at defensive midfield, starting with Dallas
there for ten minutes before he was swapped with Forshaw. In the
18th minute there was a further reshuffle that reset the
starting eleven to how they had been expected to line up, ie
Dallas at right-back, Llorente at centre-back, Phillips holding
and Forshaw back as one of the "No.8"s. At half-time Phillips
was subbed and Struijk took over as pivot, while Dallas moved to
left-back to facilitate Shackleton replacing Júnior. Later on
Roberts was brought on as the striker so James moved to a wing
role, very briefly on the left but ultimately on the right after
a switch with Raphinha.

by the former. The winning goal came via a penalty for handball
awarded after a VAR review, in the aftermath of which Cresswell
came on to add height in the event of defensive set pieces -
though the new man actually played in midfield marking Hughes.
Rodrigo was now nominally the centre-forward. For Palace Zaha
and Edouard switched in the 27th minute, so that Benteke for
Edouard was a like-for-like change at centre-forward. However
when Hughes replaced Schlupp, there was a slight tweak in that
Gallagher moved to the predominantly right-sided midfield role.

There was an interesting
tactical nuance in that Raphinha and James made up a split front
two pressing the wide centre-backs and Roberts was a "false 9"
marking Norgaard (rather than Jansson). When Cooper was injured,
Leeds were initially going to bring on Klich and probably use
Phillips at centre-back but a late change of plan meant the home
side had to resume with ten men. Even when Harrison did come on
there was a period of confusion before it became apparent that
Phillips was reverting to his original position. Instead Júnior
operated on the left of the back three with Harrison slotting in
at wing-back. In the second-half another injury and the
disruption caused, arguably contributed to Brentford seizing
control of the game with two quick goals. Once Phillips was
forced off, Forshaw became the midfield anchor with Klich ahead
of him. The final change saw the reintroduction of Bamford after
nearly three months out and a further reshuffle of Dallas to
left centre-back, Raphinha to right wing-back and James
switching wings to become a right-sided second striker. United's
true number 9 marked the occasion with an injury-time equaliser
from a flick-on by another returnee in Ayling, who had earlier
assumed the captaincy in Cooper's absence.

Leeds again deployed wingers
as split strikers and Roberts as a "false 9". The Welshman had
marking responsibility for the more defensive Chelsea central
midfielder in Jorginho, while Forshaw picked up Loftus-Cheek.
Shackleton and Harrison dilligently followed Alonso and Reece
James respectively, both of whom were pushing forward
aggressively in a genuine 3-4-3. The first change came
immediately after Chelsea took the lead for the first time,
Klich coming on to take over Jorginho-watch allowing Roberts to
push forward. James moved over to the vacated deep-lying role on
the right and Raphinha also switched wings to play as a
left-sided support striker. When United's main danger man was
surprisingly withdrawn (though possibly carrying a knock), it
was noticeable that Geldhardt was instructed to position himself
on the right and ask Roberts to shift to the left of the new
strike pairing. The duo combined to immediate great effect when
the teenager netted his first Premier League goal, assisted by
his partner. Chelsea's response was to send on Lukaku and he was
followed on to the pitch by Charlie Cresswell, who was tasked
with marking him. When it became apparent that the home team's
basic formation had not changed, Ayling became the right-back
and Dallas moved to midfield just in front of him. Chelsea's
positional changes at this point were Havertz to the right of
the forward line, Mount to the left and Hudson-Odoi to left
midfield. Note also that Jorginho was the replacement captain
for the Blues after Azpilacueta had been subbed.

reaction to the Brazilian having just given up possession to
Grealish in the lead up to a disallowed goal for Foden - though

At half-time Leeds looked to
experience off their bench to try and turn around the tie.
Raphinha came on in his usual position on the right with
Harrison moving to the left and James central. Meanwhile Dallas
was also brought on, initially as a straight swap for Bate in
midfield but his versatility was soon to the fore. He covered at
right-back (and took over the captaincy) when Ayling was
withdrawn and then went to left-back when Júnior had to be
replaced. The last change seemed aimed at giving Raphinha a free
role and entailed Koch dropping to left centre-back, Forshaw
sitting deeper and Summerville forming a youthful right flank
ahead of fellow sub Drameh. West Ham were more conservative and
only used three of their five permitted substitutions. There was
a very slight tactical alteration late on when Masuaku came on
as an additonal defensive midfielder to the left of Souček and
Rice. Effectively the trio could plug any gaps between the back
four and leave Bowen and Fornals to support Antonio.

post-game comments about using Klich in front of the

Henderson was immediately given the captain's armband when
coming on as sub and played towards the right of the central
trio. This meant Jones switched to the left until being replaced
by Milner. The final change saw the introduction of Origi at
centre-forward so Mané finished in his usual left-sided
position. The final whistle was blown after van Dijk's goal so
play did not restart.

Marcelo Bielsa's last game
as Leeds United Head Coach. As in the away game at Tottenham, he
deployed a hybrid right-winger/second striker. Then it was
James, this time it was Raphinha with Dallas behind him to mark
the opposing left wing-back. In the second-half Koch moved back
to LCB, Forshaw became the DM behind Klich, James went out to
left-wing and Rodrigo was the main striker. When Firpo was
withdrawn, Dallas took over left-back duties and Shackleton
dropped in at right midfield marking Doherty, who had switched
flanks as part of the Emerson for Sessegnon substitution. Spurs
coach Antonio Conte was shown a yellow card in the 63rd minute
for complaining too volubly following a Rodrigo foul.

James went to left-wing when
Roberts replaced Harrison. Unfortunately the Welsh striker was
almost immediately injured in a challenge with Amartey and with
all subs made, was left to nurse a strained hamstring through to
the end of the game though he could barely walk. For Leicester,
Albrighton filled in at right-back when Lookman took over the
right-sided attacking berth.

As per the previous game,
James moved to the left-wing when Harrison was subbed. However
he went over to the right when Leeds were reduced to ten men
after Júnior was stretchered off. Bamford was now a lone
striker, flanked by Gelhardt on the other side while Raphinha
acted as an unlikely left-back. Villa used their substitutions
to rotate their midfielders and change slightly to the dual
No.10 system that they used as Villa Park. Initially Ramsey
pushed forward to allow Sanson to drop in at left-midfield.
Buendía for Coutinho was a straight swap before Young came on to
fill the other attacking midfield role. Ramsey then reverted to
his original position and Sanson became the DM.

James and Raphinha swapped
over around the 40th minute and Raphinha stayed on the right for
the second-half with sub Harrison on the other wing. James led
the attack with Bamford rested on his first start since
September. When Rodrigo also had to be withdrawn on the hour,
Koch was a somewhat conservative replacement though Klich was
pushed forward to link with the forwards. Increasingly Koch
withdrew to become an extra cente-back and the formation became
more 5-2-3 until Norwich's late equaliser. This prompted the
introduction of Gelhardt and a reboot to 4-2-4; a gamble
rewarded in the most dramatic of fashions.

An unbelieveable and bizarre
match that saw Leeds make their first use of the concussion sub
rules, suffer four injuries in total including the previously
ever-present Meslier and have two players yellow-carded for
over-celebrating goals - one of whom was an unused substitute.
They were joined in the book by Assistant Coach Mark Jackson,
who was sanctioned as tensions between the benches boiled over
in stoppage time. As for the game itself, Greenwood initially
played as a direct replacement for Bamford but swapped over with
James just past the half-hour mark. Similarly Koch went in at
centre-back for Llorente but soon had to move into midfield to
cover for the concussed Klich. Wolves also lost Neves in the
first-half so Dendoncker played deeper thereafter with Trincão
on, to great effect, in the inside-right slot. After the
sending-off the home side settled into a 5-4-0 shape but after
Harrison pulled one back, seemed to deploy Podence narrower to
give a forward outlet. Possibly this allowed Ayling more freedom
to initiate United's attacking moves? At 3-2 down, Bruno Lage
belatedly used his remaining substitutions to bring on two
attacking players and go roughly 2-4-3: Boly, Coady; Chiquinho,
Moutinho, Hwang, Aït-Nouri; Trincão, Silva, Saïss.
