Harrison took over the
captaincy at the start of the second-half and then passed the
armband on to Forshaw amid the raft of substitutions just past
the hour. At this point Archie Gray moved forward to the No.10
position with Bate alongside Forshaw in the double pivot.
Blackpool's Rob Apter played in three positions, starting at
right-back. He moved to left-wing when Moore replaced Holmes
then to left-back at half-time, with Lubala taking his spot in
the forward line. Ekpiteta was the skipper for the Tangerines in
the second period.

Leeds rotated their forwards
at half-time to make replacement captain Rodrigo the fulcrum of
the attack, James going to right-wing and Aaronson tucking
inside. On a sweltering day, Southampton used the drinks break
in the second-half to make a switch to 4-2-2-2 with sub Mara
alongside Adams. Jesse Marsch responded by shifting to 5-4-1
with Harrison at left-back and James ahead of him on the same
wing. Within minutes of the change being communicated to the
players, the home team's equaliser prompted a reversion to the
starting formation via a double substitution. This brought
Sinisterra on for a competitive debut on the left with Klich
probing behind Rodrigo.

At the start of the second
half Leeds reshuffled their attacking midfield line to Aaronson
- Harrison - James. Thus Sinisterra coming on at left-wing was a
direct change but Klich played further forward than Roca had
done. To compensate Harrison seemed to drop a little deeper but
his replacement with Forshaw restored a more natural double
pivot. The final substitution window was used to bring on
Gelhardt to support Rodrigo with Klich shifting to the right.
Brighton's double change in the 79th minute was postionally
reversed in that Colwill was the one who took over at left-back
with Mitoma in an attacking role. Then when Welbeck was
withdrawn to allow another tall defender (van Hecke) to come on
in the other full-back position, Lamptey moved further forward.

The introduction of Bamford
at half-time was accommodated by Sinisterra moving to the left,
Aaronson to the right and Geldhardt dropping to the No. 10 role.
The second-half substitutions, notably those made immediately
after Brentford's third goal, were like-for-like based on the
revised positions. Jesse Marsch was shown a red card in the 64th
minute for his animated protests to an assistant referee over
the lack of a VAR check on a Leeds penalty claim; his mood not
helped by the earlier spending of over three minutes in finding
clear and obvious error with the referee's initial non-award of
a spot kick for the home side. Brentford sub Dasilva started on
the right of their front line causing Mbeumo to change flanks.
Soon Thomas Frank sought to shore up defensively by going 3-5-2
with Dasilva now in midfield and Zanka on at RCB. Mbeumo's last
act was scoring in the 80th minute, his strike ruled onside
after another lengthy VAR check. Thus the 83rd minute
substitutions were actually prior to the restart.

When Villa debutant
Augustinsson succumbed to a hamstring injury just before
half-time, Bednarek came on in central defence, Konsa went to
right-back and Young to left-back. The key incident in a dull
game was the dismissal of Sinisterra which forced Leeds to
initially adopt a 4-4-1, with Aaronson on the right and Harrison
swapping wings. The longer term fix was 5-3-1 with Júnior on at
left-back and Struijk in his more comfortable role as a
centre-back. When Jesse Marsch made his final substitutions, the
narrow midfield three became Summerville - Adams - Klich. His
opposite number tried to force a late breakthrough by
sacrificing a midfielder for Ings and going 4-2-2-2.

With five minutes left of
the first-half there was a pause while Ayew had a cut head
attended to, which Patrick Vieira used to make a switch of Ayew
and Olise. Leeds brought on Summerville for Bamford in the 62nd
minute, moving Aaronson inside and pushing Rodrigo to the fore.
Without play restarting, there was a further delay for
assessment of Ayew before Palace belatedly made two changes of
their own. The stricken man was replaced by a left-back in
Mitchell with Schlupp transferring to the right of midfield.
Milivojević for Doucouré was like-for-like and brought the home
skipper on the pitch, whilst simultaneously protecting a player
who had been fortunate to escepe a red card for multiple
offences in the opening period. The next substitution window saw
the introduction of Klich to pep up a flagging United but within
seconds, Palace took the lead. The game concluded with Gelhardt
on as a second striker and a diamond midfield of Adams;
Summerville - Harrison; Klich. In response, Palace brought on an
extra central midfielder in Hughes and moved Zaha to the right
of a front two with Mateta.

Just after the start, play
was suspended for nearly 40 minutes due to a power cut that
prevented the operation of VAR and goal-line technology. As if
to prove the point, the game that followed was punctuated by a
number of contentious decisions and two trips to the pitchside
monitor by referee Chris Kavanagh. The first was to
retrospectively grant Leeds a penalty for a handball offence
missed during regular play. Then in injury-time, to reverse a
second spot-kick award and rescind a red card shown to Gabriel;
Bamford having pushed the Arsenal defender before the
retaliation that gave rise to the initial judgements. In the
second half Aaronson and Harrison swapped positions so when the
latter was replaced by Klich, it was surprising that the
American was not asked to go back out to the right. Instead
Klich took up the wing role before tucking inside when
Summerville came on and Leeds briefly went 4-3-3. As per the
previous week they finished in a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield
(this time consisting of Adams; Klich - Summerville; Aaronson).
For Arsenal, Xhaka was the replacement captain when Ødegaard was
the first man replaced. With their next change Tomiyasu switched
to the right to accommodate Tierney at left-back. Their final
substitutions brought a tactical shift; loosely 5-4-1 with
Holding on as an extra centre-back, Fábio Vieira on the right of
midfield and Martinelli offering the closest support to Nketiah,
though still stationed on the left.

The half-time changes saw
Cooper take to the field at LCB wearing the captain's armband,
Aaronson in an unfamiliar deep-lying role and Rodrigo in the
hole. This was the start of an array of tactical shifts and
shuffling of positions by Jesse Marsch that in truth, had little
impact. Sinisterra had a spell as the centre forward when
Bamford was taken off, before being subbed himself to allow the
adoption of a 4-2-2-2 headed by Rodrigo and Gelhardt. The final
substitution reshaped the central quartet to a diamond (Adams;
Summerville - Aaronson; Klich) with Harrison nominally at
left-back. Leicester were more consistent in their formation
which saw Dewsbury-Hall playing close to the main striker, who
for the final minutes was Iheanacho; Daka having moved out to
the left flank.

A typically open but
ulitmately frustrating game to sign off before the World Cup. As
at Brentford, Jesse Marsch was perplexed by the failure of VAR
to intervene on a key decision - this time a push on Meslier
prior to Kane's goal. At half-time, Greenwood came for Gnonto to
enable a subtle change to 4-3-3; the new man slotting in on the
right of midfield with Rodrigo operating in front of him and
Aaronson leading the press in the central areas. Despite the
home side quickly levelling the scores for a second time, United
responded with a good spell of possession that prompted Antonio
Conte to change to 3-5-2 with Bissouma on as a defensive
midfielder. He had previously refreshed his defence with Doherty
relieving the ineffective Emerson Royal and Sánchez on at right
centre-back, with Dier moving to the centre. After Leeds
regained the lead, Marsch made his familiar shift to 5-4-1 with
Ayling between Kristensen and Koch, Aaronson going to the right,
Greenwood tucking inside and Rodrigo back as centre-forward.
Unfortunately unlike against Livepool and Bournemouth, it
backfired; the disruption to positions seemingly contributing to
the subsequent capitualtion. At 4-3 down and a man light after
the dismissal of Adams, the final throw of the dice was 4-4-1
with Fernández making his league debut at right-wing, Gelhardt
up front and Aaronson alongside Greenwood in central midfield.

Leeds played an assymetrical
4-3-3 formation which in possession, saw Summerville taking up
wide left positions. In tandem with Gnonto there was far more
width offered on this side than the Roca/Aaronson combination on
the right. Instead Ayling looked to fill that void and made it
resemble a 3-4-3 at times. Jesse Marsch was shown a yellow card
in the 82nd minute after previously holding on to the ball in
dissension with a throw-in decision. The double substitutions
made by Leeds in the 63rd minute and West Ham in the 80th were
positionally the reverse of those signalled on the fourth
official's board, ie Harrison left midfield/Klich right attack,
Benrahma left-wing/Downes right midfield. The visitors' earlier
changes required Kehrer to switch to right-back to accommodate
Cresswell in his favoured position. Gelhardt played on the right
when he was brought on in injury-time. It also appeared that
Harrison moved forward to fill the space vacated by Gnonto with
Klich in a more withdrawn role behind him. At the final whistle
it became apparent that it was the popular Pole's final
appearance for United as he bade a tearful farewell to the crowd
and received a guard of honour from teammates and staff. The
match was a poignant occasion for the Hammers too with the teams
wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for their
Joint-Chairman David Gold, whose death was announced hours
before kick-off.

Both teams started in a
4-3-3 with a "false 9". In possession Leeds became 4-2-4 with
Harrison pushing forward on the right, in a mirror of
Summerville's role against West Ham but occupying a more narrow
channel because of the bias towards build up on the opposite
flank where Gnonto was outstanding. Wöber and Bamford were being
primed to come on just as Villa doubled their lead in the 64th
minute - their entry on to the pitch being further delayed by a
VAR check with Buendía initially flagged offside. At this point
a switch was made to 4-2-3-1 with Aaronson on the right and
Rodrigo supporting Bamford through the middle. However Aaronson
was soon drifting back into central areas and it took his
replacement with Gelhardt to restore some balance to United's
attacking quartet. Villa made their own formation shift late on
to a conventional 4-4-2 with Sanson on the right and Coutinho on
the left of midfield while Leeds' last change meant that Wöber
went to right centre-back, a third different position within his
first hour of football for the club. One might also suggest that
Júnior's cameo appearance demonstrated that you wait ages for a
left-back and then three come along in one game.

On a tight pitch, Leeds'
4-3-3 formation often took on the look of a 4-2-3-1 as Harrison
was shuttling between left midfield and No.10 positions. The
first substitute used was Rodrigo who initially played on the
right of the attack, meaning a switch of wings for debutant
Georginio Rutter. With the next changes, Rodrigo inherited both
the captains's armband and the centre-forward role from Bamford;
flanked by Perkins on his left and Aaronson on his right. Mateo
Joseph was given the final few minutes on the left so Perkins
swapped over and Aaronson dropped back to take over Harrison's
midfield duties. Accrington manager John Coleman did not utilise
his bench until the 80th minute when he made a quadruple

Leeds set up in a 4-2-3-1,
presumably to match up with the shape of Everton's central trio,
while the post-Marsch width was again in evidence. Unfortunately
the performance was woeful with an inability to progress through
the thirds and then resorting to long balls which were easily
repelled by the home defence. The loss of Wöber at half-time
forced a defensive reshuffle with Ayling going to RCB and Koch

Aaronson came on in the hole with Gnonto switching to the right

He set up his new charges in a 4-4-2 formation with Aaronson

re-entered the playing area to do so. Summerville had replaced
him on the hour mark and went out to the right, permitting
Harrison to move into his preferred left-wing role. The game
management tactic was to send on Roca as an extra central
midfielder, with instructions for Adams to sit in just behind
McKennie and the new man. A largely passive Southampton
attempted to rouse themselves with a triple substitution and a
change to 4-2-3-1. Ward-Prowse was pushed into the "10" behind
Mara with Walcott and Elyounoussi tucking inside from the
flanks, Lavia and Diallo holding.

Leeds used a 4-2-3-1 that
transitioned out of possession to 4-5-1, with McKennie dropping
back to right central midfield. He later adopted a more
conservative role full-time, when Aaronson was brought on to
play as the attacking midfielder. Though Fulham were reportedly
matching up with United's basic formation, in reality Palhinha
was deployed as a lone pivot. Following their triple
substitution, the home team saw out the game with Willian on the
left and Decordova-Reid on the opposite flank.

Gnonto initially had a free
role just behind fellow sub Joseph Fernández but moved to the
left-wing when Greenwood came on. After taking the lead, Chelsea
shored things up by sacrificing their wide forwards in favour of
a diamond central midfield with Zakaria at its base and
Gallagher at the tip. The success of this tactic was
demonstrated by the fact that Arrizabalaga, who donned the
captain's armband after Kovačić was withdrawn, was barely tested
by Leeds' outfield players. His most challenging save being to
deny his opposite number in injury-time, when Meslier directed a
header goalwards after coming up for a corner.

Another memorable trip to
Molineux, exactly twelve months after an epic 3-2 win there
early in Jesse Marsch's tenure. There were some remarkable
parallels between the two games, most notably the three scorers
that night all netting again - something clearly not lost on
Luke Ayling who reprised his "poundshop Robbie Keane"
celebration. Wolves went to 3-4-1-2 from the 57th minute with
Lemina dropping back to sweeper, Traoré and Jonny as wing-backs
and Sarabia playing just behind Jiménez and Cunha. Javi Gracia
responded with a formation change of his own and what appeared a
negative decision to replace Gnonto with Kristensen, only for
the Dane to immediately snatch his first goal for the club to
make it 3-0. Leeds were now 5-3-2 with Ayling at right
centre-back and Harrison on the left of midfield. With the home
side quickly pulling two goals back and piling on the pressure
in search of an equaliser, a further change was made to 5-4-1.
As Summerville came on at left-wing, Harrison switched back to
the right. After the sending-off of Jonny, his yellow card for a
studs up challenge on Ayling being upgraded following a VAR
check, Wolves were roughly 3-2-3-1 with Traoré/Sarabia/Cunha
behind Jiménez. They also pushed Collins forward in injury-time
leaving a gap exploited by Rodrigo for the clincher. Even that
courted more controversy with the goal surprisingly being
allowed to stand despite the VAR official, David Coote, flagging
a shirt tug by Roca on Traoré in the build-up. In the ensuing
protests, unused sub Matheus Nunes was dismissed for getting too
close to a linesman in expressing his disappointment though this
was succesfully appealed. As in the Carabao Cup tie between the
teams in November, Moutinho replaced Neves and also took over as
captain.

As in the FA Cup tie,
Palhinha was the deep-lying playmaker and the Cottagers'
formation was effectively 4-1-4-1. Leeds were more or less
4-2-3-1 although McKennie was usually quite far in advance of
Roca whenever the latter made himself available to receive
possession from Meslier or the defence. Meanwhile Rodrigo's
average postion was actually in the defensive half as United
struggled to progress the ball into the final third. After the
substitutions, Harrison/Gnonto played on the right with
Sinisterra on the left and Summerville supporting Bamford
through the middle.

Sam Allardyce set Leeds up
in a 4-5-1 for his daunting first assignment as Leeds' boss.
Gnonto and Harrison swapped over from the 40th minute and
therefore when they were replaced in turn in the second-half,
Rodrigo played on the left and Summerville on the right. The new
pair stepped in from the flanks to team up in attack, when a
shift was made to 5-3-2 late on with Struijk between the
starting centre-backs. City's Rico Lewis again played a dual
role as part-time right-back but mainly defensive midfielder.
After Aké's injury, Walker came in on the right of the defence,
Akanji and Laporte shuffled across and Lewis moved to the left
of Gündoğan so that he could cover the other full-back berth.

Newcastle began with
Joelinton rather than Bruno Guimarães anchoring their midfield
but around the half-hour mark, they switched to 4-2-3-1 and both
became DMs. The change also allowed Isak to move infield behind
Wilson and paid instant dividends; the Swede popping up on the
right side of the area to draw the foul for their first penalty.
Leeds matched them up at half-time with the introduction of
Forshaw beside Koch and McKennie playing further forward. For
the Geordies, Saint-Maximin initially operated on the left with
Willock moving to the hole and Isak now the centre-forward.
Saint Maximin then took over the free role when Anderson came on
in the wide position. After Júnior's sending-off, Leeds
sacrificed Bamford in going 4-2-1-2 with Struijk at left-back
and Aaronson/Gnonto as split strikers. Curiously both Wilson and
Bamford were booked for not taking the most direct exit from the
pitch when being subbed. Meanwhile a regrettable footnote to a
frenetic game, was a crowd intruder who confronted Eddie Howe in
injury-time before being hauled away by stewards. He earned
himself a lifetime ban from the club while Leeds Magistrates'
Court imposed a twelve-week prison sentence and a six-year
football banning order.
